22 April 2009

Looking for ways to stretch that dollar further? Take a look at these helpful tips to keep your bank account in the green.

1.

Go to the beach - Every Aussie knows this one for when you're broke. Whether you're looking to go for a dip or you just want to soak up some of the great Australian sun, the beach is always a great place to go and you don't even have to bring your wallet. Make sure you pack in plenty of sunscreen though!

2.

Don't forget your discount/student card - Many bars, restaurants, travel companies and entertainment providers cater for the empty pocketed student/backpackers, by providing special cheap eats or half price drinks. ISIC, YHA, VIP, NOMAD and all student cards are eligible for special rates.

3.

Duty Free - Much room left in your backpack? Stock up on duty free before you leave the airport, the stock will always come in handy.

4.

Phone calls - Australia offers a variety of different phone network providers that work out a lot cheaper than using the pay phone to call home or your new found friends. It's very competitive so make sure you shop around. Newsagents and the like also sell phone cards which generally work out cheapest if you are calling home - they can be used from your mobile, pay phone or landline. Want cheaper? Send them a Facebook message.

5.

Run out of money? - There are many ways to make a quick legitimate dollar in Australia. Fruit picking and pamphlet delivery jobs for the local newspaper are great options to grab some extra cash. If you are looking for fruit picking jobs there are some great harvest job agencies like MADEC, or many regional hostels will give you the low down on the farms closest to you.
