Drop Bears and Other Perils

26 March 2009

As you may have heard, Australia is home to many of the world's most dangerous creatures, from Redback Spiders, to Death Adder Snakes, Crocodiles, the Irukandji Jellyfish and Great White Sharks.

Taking this into account foreign tourists generally have a heightened sense of awareness in regards to our native wildlife (however, the chances of being killed in a car accident are by far larger than the chances of attack by one of these creatures).

With Australia's already impressive list of natural predators it is not surprising that some room is left open for a few 'tall ones' on behalf of the Aussie local.

Ever heard of the dreaded 'Drop Bear' - the Koala's uglier, larger and nastier cousin. Story has it that these 'Drop Bears' drop from trees upon unsuspecting prey (like tourists) and attack them viciously.

This animal has a very similar quality to Hoop Snakes, Yowies, Yetis and Bigfoot. Not the fact that it can grasp its tail in its jaws and roll after its prey like a wheel or kidnap and attack campers but the fact that it is completely fictitious and are generally made reference to for a good laugh towards the uninformed tourist.

Keep in mind that now you know this it doesn't mean that you should tell all your friends, maybe you could keep it for yourself and play a joke on one of your travelling companions.
